If
you are like me and travel lots of miles in the city and/or countryside each
day, you may often find an in-car compass a welcome friend. I've tried
lots of different models and have settled for the inexpensive liquid filled
models you find at any truck stop or Wal-Mart store, since all the digital
models I tested were very inaccurate and required frequent battery replacement.
I recently installed a digital model sold by
PNI Corporation.
The model I chose is also available from
Cabela's and displays inside and outside temperature, altitude, barometric
pressure and alerts for ice on the roadway. The unit is powered by a
lithium battery, but a power cord is included to allow it to be powered by your
vehicle's electrical system. The unit has a sensor which activates
the backlight at night and it turns itself off automatically. The price
for this model at Cabela's is about $130, but there are less expensive
models available directly from
PNI. They also
offer hand-held models and reconditioned units at a reduced price.
If
you have a need for a compass in your vehicle, you should consider one of these
functional units. While they are a little more expensive than those you
will find at a discount store, they are well worth the investment.
